What are ethics?

Individuals face ethical questions daily about how to act, how to conduct oneself, or how to behave towards others. Each time we ask ourselves the question: “What should I do?” - we are faced with an ethical decision. The process of establishing ethical decision making includes asking questions such as:

  • What do I believe in? What do I value?
  • How do I develop and maintain good relationships?
  • Am I willing to accept the consequences of my decisions?
  • Who (and what) should I consider when making my decisions?
  • What will be the results of my actions?

Organizational ethics is fundamentally concerned with how individuals “ought” to behave collectively with those who share a common purpose.

What type of organization should be concerned about ethics?

Every type and size of organization needs to develop an ethical framework in which to conduct business. State agencies, privately owned and publicly held businesses, and non-profits need to be aware of their stakeholders and how the organizational decisions affect those groups.

Who should care about the ethical environment in an organization?

The simple answer is everyone.  At the core, ethics considers the nature and quality of your relationships with other people. So, the topic of ethics is an essential conversation for your entire organization.
